1). Firefighters battle blaze in London's Soho July 10, 2009. Clouds of thick black smoke rose above central London today as fire fighters fought a blaze in the bustling Soho area of the capital. The blaze at 76 Dean Street, in the historic area of the West End, began at 2pm. Firecrews called to the scene used cranes to reach the building, which houses the hedge fund Future Capital, as flames ripped through it. Smoke rising from the building could be seen from miles around. Twelve fire engines and 60 firefighters were sent to fight the flames, which witnesses said started in an air conditioning duct in the building. One man who works inside the building said: “We’ve all been evacuated in the last hour." Nino Ripani, manager of nearby restaurant Signor Zilli’s, said: “It’s really shocking - it’s something that you don’t see every day. It’s really getting to serious stuff now - we can see the black bits coming out.” Restaurant customers who had been dining outside were brought inside but the business had stayed open, he said. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Soho is a busy area of central London filled with shops, bars and restaurants and tourists clamoured to get a glimpse of the flames. Fire engines struggled through the crowds to get to the four-storey building. Yesterday, fire crews were called to a building in nearby Newport Place, housing a restaurant and offices. The fire damaged the basement of the five-storey building but no-one was hurt. General manager of the Couch bar, Laura Carr, said the end of the street was blocked off. “I think it’s spread to the next building, I’m not sure. “There are lots of people hanging around and just watching, and there would normally be lots of people around at this time anyway. We are trading as normal at the moment and will wait to see if there are any further instructions. We’re just playing it by ear.” Two and a half hours after it broke out, the fire was brought under control but the area is likely to be cordoned off for the evening. No members of the public were injured but two firefighters were slightly hurt.

China has accused an Australian Rio Tinto executive of bribing staff from Chinese steel companies during iron ore negotiations this year, according to the Australian foreign ministry. “As understood from a Shanghai State Security Bureau, during China’s iron ore negotiations with foreign miners in 2009, Stern Hu gathered and stole state secrets from China via illegal means including bribing internal staff of Chinese steel companies,” Stephen Smith, Australian foreign minister said, citing a statement posted on an official Chinese web site. Mr Smith said China’s national security authority was conducting a criminal investigation of Mr Hu, the Australian detainee, and three of his Chinese co-workers. The four men, all from Rio’s iron ore trading team, have been detained since the weekend. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday said that authorities had obtained evidence which proves they stole – for a foreign country – Chinese state secrets, which hurt China’s economic interests and economic security. Rio Tinto said in a statement on Friday that it was “surprised and concerned” by the accusations that four of its staff in China have been involved in bribery. “Rio Tinto is following developments very closely,” it added. “As the company has said in earlier statements, we are not aware of any evidence that would support these allegations.” Beijing on Thursday also detained an executive of a large Chinese steel mill, as part of a widening probe that has threatened to raise tension between the two countries. “The business of dealing with difficult, complex diplomatic questions, particularly when human lives are concerned, requires sensitivity and proper handling,” Kevin Rudd, the Australian prime minister, told state radio ABC from Italy, where he was attending the G8 summit. Australian officials were due to visit Mr Hu on Friday. ”China has its own laws about state secrets, they are clearly broader than the view that Australia might take,” Mr Smith said. ”Frankly it is difficult for a nation like Australia to see a relationship between espionage and national security and what appeared to be suggestions about commercial or economic negotiations.” “Having said that, Mr Hu now...runs the risk of being subject to Chinese criminal, legal and judicial processes.” Industry analysts said they expected the probe to extend to other large steel companies, perhaps including Baosteel, China’s largest steel company. The case highlights the fact that in China the issue of what is a state secret is a grey area. Even performing due diligence on a company looking to list in Hong Kong could generate information considered a secret – if authorities wanted to interpret it that way, one lawyer said.

Как заявил глава комиссии Владимир Сивкович, следственные ГПУ не только незаконно «слушали» обычных граждан и народных депутатов, но и так же незаконно следили за ними. В частности, ВСК ВР получила достоверную информацию о том, что в одном из оперативно-розыскных дел МВД Украины еще 05 февраля 2008 года дана задача на визуальное наблюдение за народным депутатом Виктором Тополовым. Раньше сообщалось, что под руководством Климович в обход суда осуществляли мониторинг телефонного трафика около 18 тысяч абонентов сотовой связи. Как сообщалось, Виктор Ющенко 5 сентября 2004 года, будучи кандидатом в президенты, встречался с руководством Службы безопасности Украины, после чего почувствовал недомогание и 10 сентября был госпитализирован в венскую клинику. Врачи заявили, что Виктор Ющенко был отравлен диоксином, причем яд попал в организм пациента примерно за пять дней до госпитализации.

В подъезде его дома около трех часов ночи на него напали трое в масках. Мужчина попытался убежать, однако грабители догнали его, оглушили и вывезли в какую-то лесополосу. Преступники забрали ключи от квартиры и сейфа, а затем, бросив предпринимателя, отправились к нему домой. М.Гончар был гражданским мужем дочери президента Виталины, он приходится отцом внучке президента Ярине. Виктор Ющенко отрекся от родства со своим бывшим зятем, заявив, что его "семья не имеет отношения к этому человеку". Ранее Михаила Гончара обвиняли в стрельбе по кабинету народного депутата Юлии Ковалевой, а его отца - в получении взятки в 20 тыс. долл.

Высокий представитель Евросоюза по вопросам внешней политики и безопасности Хавьер Солана совершит на следующей неделе балканское турне, в ходе которого обсудит последние события в регионе и его отношения с ЕС, говорится в сообщении пресс-службы Соланы. «Хавьер Солана посетит Сербию, Македонию, Косово и Черногорию с 13 по 15 июля», - говорится в сообщении пресс-службы. Наблюдатели отмечают, что Солана посетит три страны (Сербию, Македонию и Черногорию), с которыми Евросоюз намерен ввести безвизовый режим. Ожидается, что соответствующее решение будет принято в конце года. В первый день визита, 13 июля, согласно официальной программе, Солана проведет в Белграде переговоры с президентом Сербии Борисом Тадичем, премьер-министром Мирко Цветковичем, первым вице-премьером и министром внутренних дел Ивицей Дачичем, министром иностранных дел Вуком Еремичем, а также министром по делам Косово и Метохии Гораном Богдановичем. В Косове 14 июля у Соланы запланированы переговоры с президентом Фатмиром Сейдиу и премьер-министром Хашимом Тачи, а также с руководством Миссии Евросоюза в области обеспечения верховенства закона и правопорядка (EULEX).
