The corner property, known as Hugh House, used to be owned by Lily Safra, widow of Edmond Safra, the billionaire banker. Its six floors feature seven bedrooms, four reception rooms, a library, seven bathrooms and two shower rooms. Savills, the estate agent handling the sale, had set a guide price of £45m for the lavish property, arguing that it was “arguably the best house” on Eaton Square, one of the most prestigious parts of Belgravia. However, the Financial Times understands that the house ended up selling at a £12m discount to Savills’ guide price. The buyer is a wealthy European whose identity is not known. Mr Tchigirinski owns 23.3 per cent of Sibir, although his right to the shares is the subject of a dispute. He is also a former director of the company, whose oil assets are all located in Russia. Sibir announced in April that it was suing the tycoon – as well as Henry Cameron, its former chief executive – in the High Court. The company alleges that $328m (£203m) of its money was improperly transferred to Mr Tchigirinski and companies associated with the Russian. Among its further allegations is a claim that the pair improperly got Sibir to agree to pay off $62m of debts owed by Mr Tchigirinski’s company. As part of its legal offensive, Sibir secured an entitlement to the proceeds of the Eaton Square house sale after a mortgage on the property was repaid, a person close to Sibir said. That residual amount was said to be either £14m or £17m. Sibir is also claiming ownership of Villa Maria Irina, Mr Tchigirinski’s property in Cap Martin, on the south coast of France near Monaco. Sibir said that Interior Ministry investigators on Wednesday entered the offices of Magma oil company, a subsidiary of Sibir, and were searching for documents related to the activities of Moscow Oil and Gas Company in 2006 and the Moscow Oil Company in 2002 and 2003. At the time these companies were run by Mr Tchigirinsky. The Moscow refinery run jointly by Sibir and Gazprom Neft, the state- controlled oil major, was also searched. Representatives of the economic crime department of the Interior Ministry could not be reached for comment. Sibir Energy said the investigations had no relation to it or Magma. Analysts said the raids looked like an attempt to turn the heat up on Mr Tchigirinsky, who is believed to have fled Russia and is already facing a slew of lawsuits over his 23.5 per cent holding in Sibir as Gazprom Neft, the state-controlled oil group, tightens its grip over the company. “The writing has been on the wall for some time and Thursday’s action reflects the fact they’re getting on with it and will push to take full ownership,” said Chris Weafer, chief strategist at Uralsib investment bank in Moscow. “They have gone about buying out shareholders so far but they don’t seem to have any intention of buying Mr Tchigirinsky out. He’s not going to get a penny.” Gazprom Neft has already acquired nearly 49 per cent of Sibir by buying out the mid-sized oil company’s other main shareholder and most of its 34 per cent free float. It moved in after Sibir was rocked by a series of corporate governance scandals involving Mr Tchigirinsky, who borrowed $325m (£203m) in company funds to protect his property empire and his Sibir stake as he fought off a barrage of margin calls as stock markets collapsed last year. Gazprom Neft declined to comment on the raids. Mr Tchigirinsky could not be reached for comment. Mr Tchigirinsky is facing a barrage of lawsuits, including a $400m lawsuit by minority shareholders in Sibir in London’s High Court over the alleged corporate governance infractions.
