German billionaire Adolf Merckle commits suicide
6.January 2009, 17:20
SWABIAN MANUFACTURER and billionaire Adolf Merckle died when a train struck him on Monday evening at about 17.30 near his home in the southern German town of Ulm. He was assailed by financial turmoil and struggling to salvage his business empire, his family said. Merckle was one of the richest men in Germany and was ranked as the world's 94th richest person in 2008 according to Forbes magazine. "The desperate situation of his companies caused by the financial crisis, the uncertainties of the last few weeks and his powerlessness to act, have broken the passionate family entrepreneur and he took his own life,“ a family statement said. His family controls a number of German companies including cement maker 1).Heidelberg Cement and generic drug company 2).Ratiopharm, but its empire was rocked last year by wrong-way bets made on shares in carmaker 3).Volkswagen. It was only a few days ago that the 74-year-old, with the help of several banks, was able to stabilize his commercial empire. Most recently all creditor banks had signed a forbearance agreement for the coming months and signed an additional moratorium on further lending. Apparently Merckle had received a stop-gap loan at the last minute in the amount of 400 million euros. Merckle had gotten into trouble through a mistaken gamble on Volkswagen stocks, among other things. On top of this was the fact that HeidelbergCement was many billions of euros in the hole after its acquisition of British competitor Hanson. Shares in HeidelbergCement were off 5 percent at 31.70 euros at 1547 GMT, having dropped to 29.16 euros earlier in the session.
