1). “MARKET LOW” SHOT DEAD "Lawyer Stanislav Markelov was killed near building No. 1 on Prechistenka Street. Documents bearing his name were found on the body," Anatoly Bagmet, an official with the Prosecutor General's office, told journalists. Budanov, who commanded a tank regiment during the second military campaign in Chechnya, was convicted in the summer of 2003 of strangling an 18-year-old Chechen woman three years earlier and was sentenced to 10 years in jail. He was paroled earlier this month. Elsa Kungayeva's family had appealed against Budanov's early release, but a court rejected their plea last Thursday just hours after the former officer was released. A source in the law enforcement bodies said earlier that Markelov was shot dead from a gun with silencer at around 2 p.m. Moscow time (11:00 GMT) near the Kropotkinskaya metro station in Moscow downtown. "An assailant ran from behind to Markelov and a woman escorting him, Anastasia Baburova, and shot him in the back of the head from point-blank range. Police said earlier that one man was killed and two more seriously wounded after an unknown suspect opened fire on them. Как стало известно газете ВЗГЛЯД, незадолго до нападения Маркелов вышел после пресс-конференции, посвященной УДО экс-полковника ВС РФ Юрия Буданова, проходившей в Независимом пресс-центре, на улице Пречистенка, д. 17/9.  Станиславу Маркелову было 35 лет. Он родился в Москве, окончил Московскую государственную юридическую академию.  Как писала газета ВЗГЛЯД, отец Эльзы Кунгаевой Виса Кунгаев, который проживает в Норвегии, сообщил, что адвокату угрожали. «В пятницу он (Станислав Маркелов) позвонил мне и сказал, что ему угрожают!», - рассказал он газете ВЗГЛЯД.

Russian ship loses timber off south coast Mon Jan 19, 2009 3:28pm GMT LONDON (Reuters) - A Russian cargo ship lost 1,500 tonnes of timber in heavy storms off the south coast of England on Monday, Dover coastguard said. The sawn timber was lost from the deck of the Sinegorsk, 14 miles south of Newhaven. Aerial surveillance is being carried out to see if the load, which was being transported in secure bundles, has remained intact. Other vessels in the area have been warned about the debris from the 25-crew Sinegorsk, which was heading to Egypt from Sweden. The timber is expected to come ashore somewhere between Brighton and Newhaven depending on weather conditions. Last January, the large cargo vessel Ice Prince lost 2,000 tonnes of sawn timber from its deck before it sank in rough seas in the English Channel off the coast of Dorset. Most of the wood came ashore along the West Sussex coast near Worthing.
