Hammer killer jailed for 39 years for murdering British couple in the Canary Islands

9:22 PM on 13th April 2009 A Spanish man convicted of murdering a British couple in a violent hammer attack has been jailed for 39 years. Construction worker Juan Carmelo Santana was sentenced to 22 years in prison for killing Brian Johnson, 59, by battering him repeatedly around the head in a drug-fuelled frenzy. He was given another 17 years for the murder of Brian's wife Tina, 57, who died after a single blow to the head. Judges also ordered him today to pay the couple's son Sam £270,000 in compensation.

The sentence came 11 days after a jury convicted Santana of murdering the expat couple when they went to collect unpaid rent from him at an apartment they owned on the sunshine island of Fuerteventura on July 1 2006. Under Spanish law, he will serve no more than 30 years in prison. The three years he has already served in custody will be deducted from his jail time. Mrs Johnson was killed by a single hammer blow to the head and her husband suffered up to 10 hammer blows as he arrived at the flat Santana rented from them minutes later. The killer went out for drinks with friends after hiding their bodies under his bed - then wrapped them in plastic bags and blankets and dumped them on waste ground. A hunter out walking with his dog discovered them partially buried under rocks four days after they were killed.

HSBC confirms interest in office property sale April 13, 2009 HSBC today confirmed that it is considering selling three of its largest offices, including its London headquarters, after receiving interest from possible bidders. The bank, which recently raised over £12.5 billion through a rights issue, may sell its offices in New York, Paris and Canary Wharf in London or could opt to off-load the properties and lease them back if there is insufficient interest for an outright sale. A spokesman for HSBC, said today: “We are taking a look at the market, yes. There are people interested in buying at an appropriate price.” The Sunday Times revealed yesterday that HSBC was hoping to raise £2.7 billion by selling the three buildings and has hired CB Richard Ellis, the property business, to head up the process. HSBC bought back its building at Canary Wharf for £838 million from Metrovacesa at the end of last year after the Spanish group failed to refinance a loan secured on the building. Earlier this month, HSBC revealed there had been a strong take-up for its billion rights issue aimed at raising cash mainly to plug a hole largely created by losses at Household, its US division. After the rights issue, HSBC will have a “core” tier one capital ratio — a measure of capital on the bank's balance sheet as a proportion of its loans — of 8.5 per cent. Underwriters and advisers on the deal are in line for fees of more than £400 million. It was underwritten by Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Cazenove, HSBC and three other co-bookrunners. The advisers are expected to receive a success fee of another 0.5 per cent — worth £64 million. Analysts believe that HSBC will have more firepower for takeovers after the rights issue. It has been linked recently with a bid for Royal Bank of Scotland's Asian assets.
