Cave-in traps nine miners in Ukraine. Tue, 05 May 2009 17:10:40 GMT Rescue operations continue as nine Ukrainian miners remain trapped underground following a cave-in at a coal mine in the eastern Donetsk Region. Fourteen miners were inside Dzerzhinsk mine at the time of the accident Monday, but five managed to exit safely, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported. More than 18 hours after the collapse, local mining officials were optimistic on that rescue operations would be successful. Outdated Ukrainian mines, many built in the 19th century, are accident-prone and lack standard modernization beyond the Soviet era. Three gas blasts in two weeks killed 106 miners in 2007. Last year, similar explosions claimed more than a dozen lives.

(adds new details, visit by prime minister) KIEV, May 7 (Reuters) - Fire tore through a gaming hall full of slot machines in central Ukraine early on Thursday, killing nine people and injuring 11, the Emergencies Ministry said. Ministry officials said the fire engulfed the hall just before 1 a.m. in the industrial city of Dnipropetrovsk. Officials said preliminary investigations showed the fire began in one of the dozens of slot machines in the facility, where soccer fans had gathered to watch the televised Champions League semi-final between Barcelona and Chelsea. "The main version for the moment is that the fire started in a slot machine," Emergencies Minister Volodymyr Shandra told Fifth Channel television. "There is no evidence of arson or any sort of explosion from gas." Television pictures showed the gutted hall with blackened slot machines and dangling wires. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko flew to the scene of the blaze in Dnipropetrovsk, her home town, and was due to chair a cabinet meeting devoted to the accident. Interfax Ukraine news agency said two female employees of the hall were among the dead. It said dozens of firefighters and rescue workers were sent to the scene after security staff were overwhelmed by smoke and flames. Ukraine's SBU security service, quoted by Interfax, said fire regulations had been infringed, with machines jammed into a small space and no escape routes available. Dingy gaming halls have sprung up in Ukraine and other former Soviet republics since the fall of communism, prompting calls by officials to move them from city centres to the outskirts. Officials in Dnipropetrovsk said all casinos, gambling halls and night clubs would be closed until safety checks were conducted.

GENERAL The arrival of a new US administration is an opportunity for giving a fresh impetus to EU-US relations which are more important than ever. We need a strong transatlantic partnership based on politics of principles and common values. The Prague meeting allowed for a first political contact between the EU leaders collectively and the new President. There was exchange of views on the most pressing and strategic issues of the day. The EU and the US will revert to these and other issues at their regular June summit. SPECIFIC: ECONOMIC AND FINANCIAL SITUATION The crisis is both severe and global, and requires a strong policy response at all levels and across the world. The EU has taken important decisions in this respect, including a major economic recovery plan, which is also to stimulate employment. Both the EU and the US have greatly contributed to the successful outcome of the G20 summit in London and are determined to work hand in hand to ensure implementation of the decisions reached. The EU is particularly pleased that global financial regulation and supervision will be strengthened. The EU also welcomes the pledge to resist protectionism and is ready to join forces, including via the Transatlantic Economic Council, in order to preserve and strengthen transatlantic and international trade and investment. The EU and the US remain committed to reaching an ambitious and balanced conclusion to WTO Doha Development Round.
