The rioting began in Athens on Saturday soon after the shooting in the central Exarchia district, where youths threw petrol bombs at police, burned dozens of cars and smashed shop windows. It quickly spread to Greece's second largest city of Thessaloniki and other towns in northern Greece. Cities on the holiday islands of Crete and Corfu also saw protests at the shooting, which prompted Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos to offer his resignation. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, whose fragile government has been rocked by a series of scandals, rejected it, a ministry spokeswoman said. "On behalf of the government and the prime minister, I express sorrow for the incident and especially the death of the young boy," Pavlopoulos said. "An investigation to clarify the incident has already begun. There will be an exemplary punishment and, above all, measures will be taken so that this will never be repeated." Two police officers were arrested and being questioned over the incident, according to a police statement. The officers said their patrol car had been attacked by 30 youths throwing stones and other objects. When they attempted to arrest the youths, they were attacked again and one of the officers fired three shots, killing the boy, the statement said. It was the first time since 1985 that police have killed a minor in Greece, a police spokesman said. A hospital official said the boy was 15 years old.

Thieves get €85 million in jewelry from Paris boutique By Doreen Carvajal Friday, December 5, 2008 PARIS: A savvy band of jewel thieves, armed with guns and some posing as women, have struck in the heart of the city's golden triangle of luxury shops, stealing more than €85 million worth of diamonds, rings and watches from a posh Harry Winston boutique.
The brazen $108 million theft Thursday, which some French newspapers quickly branded the heist of the century, reflected a savvy knowledge of the jewelry business, happening during the peak of the holiday season, when jewelry stocks are plentiful. It was the second time that the boutique on Avenue Montaigne was robbed in the past 14 months and came a little more than a week after Cartier in Paris lost a €635,000 diamond ring to a veiled woman posing as a tourist from Qatar who switched the real gem for a fake. "Harry Winston is not the only target," said Doron Lévy, a spokesman for the Union of French Jewelers in Paris, who huddled with executives of Harry Winston on Friday to debate a public response. "It is interesting how imaginative these thieves are. They are very observant and they know how people work in the shops. And they are always looking for vulnerable points." The police said that at least four people were involved in the robbery of Harry Winston, which is on a street of deluxe shops near the Champs Élysées that is crowded with boutiques for Chanel, Dior and Gucci. Around closing time at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, the thieves entered and confronted 15 employees. At least two of the robbers were dressed in wigs and women's clothes, while a fourth accomplice apparently waited outside as the getaway driver, Lévy said. The robbers struck two employees and then scooped up the jewels in the display cases into sacks and were gone in less than 15 minutes. No one was seriously hurt, the police said. On Friday, Harry Winston issued a terse two-sentence response from its headquarters in New York. "We are cooperating with the authorities in their investigation," a spokeswoman, Rhonda Barnat, said in the statement. "Our first concern is the well-being of our employees." The golden doors of its boutique on Avenue Montaigne were locked Friday, and some of its display windows were empty. Barnat said by telephone that the reopening date had not been set. Even so, knots of television cameramen gathered around its entrance, along with tourists taking unlikely souvenir photos. The boutique has already weathered an earlier audacious robbery of €10 million of goods, in October 2007. At the time, the company offered a €500,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of its diamonds. In April, Harry Winston posted a pre-tax gain of $13.5 million from the settlement of its insurance claim in that earlier robbery. To date, the record for jewelry theft remains a heist in February 2003, when thieves reaped €100 millions in diamonds from the vaults at Antwerp's diamond exchange. Lévy, of the jewelers' trade group, said thieves were becoming more imaginative and were carefully studying how stores functioned. For example, the culprits in the latest Harry Winston robbery knew the names of some of the store's employees, he said, and they dressed as women because they were aware that typically jewelers are more trusting of females and so more likely to allow them to enter.
"It's a very sensitive moment when someone tries to enter a shop," Lévy said, noting that the employees study the potential customer before unlocking the doors. "If they know you are not a client, they will not open." In a jewelry robbery in London, he added, thieves successfully overcame suspicion by arriving in a Bentley automobile. The thieves, one dressed in a dark blazer and a Panama hat and the other in a cream-colored suit, struck Graff Diamonds on Sloane Street, in West London, in June 2007. In the Paris case, the thieves were young white men who were speaking in French but had accents, he said. "They were professionals," Lévy said. One investigator told the newspaper Le Monde that it would be difficult to resell the jewels in Western Europe. But apparently it is another story in Eastern Europe, with the investigator calling that territory "a new El Dorado for some years for traffickers."

Armed robbers dressed in drag have stolen jewellery worth tens of millions of pounds from a luxury shop in Paris. Three thieves took rings, necklaces and watches from the Harry Winston store near the Champs-Elysees, a police official said. The men entered the shop last night and forced staff to hand over almost all the jewels on display before making their getaway. At least two of them were men dressed as women and wearing wigs, the police official added. They brandished handguns and threatened about 15 employees, hitting some on the head with guns. The value of the stolen jewels has been estimated at between £40m and £53m, but police said it was too early to give an exact figure. Investigators believe the robbers were very well informed about their target.
"Apparently they knew the names of some of the staff," the official said. New York-based Harry Winston said in a statement: "We are co-operating with the authorities in their investigation. Our first concern is the well-being of our employees." The robbery came just over a year after another raid on the same store.
In October 2007, masked robbers forced staff to empty the store's safes and took at least £11m worth of gems. The Harry Winston chain has sold jewellery to royalty around the world and lends some of its finest pieces to celebrities for events including the Oscars.
Honda withdraws from Formula One racing By Mark McDonald Friday, December 5, 2008 HONG KONG: Honda disbanded its renowned Formula One team on Friday, a startling pullout that has its origins in the dismal state of the auto industry and which figures to have huge repercussions on the high-profile racing circuit. A glum Takeo Fukui, the chief executive officer of Honda, made the announcement himself at a press conference in Tokyo. Fukui called the company's withdrawal from F1 ""a difficult decision" caused by the worldwide economic gloom and ""the quickly deteriorating operating environment facing the global auto industry." "I offer my sincere apologies," he said, ""to everyone involved."
The automaker has struggled badly this year, battered by weaker sales and a stronger yen. Honda's stock is down nearly 60 percent in 2008 and third-quarter net profits were off 31 percent. "Honda must protect its core business activities and secure the long term," Fukui said. ""A recovery is expected to take some time."
While Fukui cited economic reasons for departing F1, the team's results in 2008 were hardly encouraging. Honda finished in ninth place out of 10 teams that finished the season. A co-sponsored team, Super Aguri-Honda, withdrew after just four races of the 2008 season, citing a lack of funding. The team's drivers also fared poorly: Rubens Barricello of Brazil finished 14th in the standings and Jenson Button of Britain was 18th. With the Honda racing team now up for sale, one of the principal worries among frenzied Formula One bloggers around the world was the future of the F1 team from Toyota. The world's largest automaker has had its own financial troubles this year, but a Toyota spokesman was quoted earlier in the week as saying the company had no intentions of putting its F1 team up on blocks. Formula One bills itself the world's richest sport. The Honda driver Jo Schlesser was killed at the French Grand Prix in 1968, leading the team to shut down its team and withdraw from Grand Prix racing. Honda bought the British American Racing team outright in 2006 to make a full return to the sport.

Тело пилота самолета МиГ-29, разбившегося в пятницу в 35 километрах от Читы, найдено на месте крушения, сообщил помощник командующего объединением ВВС и ПВО Сибири и Забайкалья Валерий Карамышев.
«Тело погибшего пилота найдено. На месте крушения в настоящий момент продолжают работу специалисты», - сказал он, сообщает РИА «Новости».
Как писала газета ВЗГЛЯД, самолет МиГ-29 разбился в 5-ти километрах от аэродрома Домна (Читинская область) 5 декабря, летчик II класса, заместитель командира авиационной эскадрилии подполковник Валерьян Копарев погиб, сообщают ВВС. «На земле жертв и разрушений нет. К месту падения вылетела комиссия в составе представителей МО РФ и ВВС. Причина падения самолета выясняется», - говорится в сообщении, передает РИА «Новости».
