Horlick falls victim to Madoff 'fraud'

Nicola Horlick's Bramdean Alternatives emerged on Friday as a prominent victim of the alleged $50bn fraud by Bernard Madoff, when the listed investment fund revealed almost 10 per cent of its investments were exposed to the New York broker. Bramdean, founded by Ms Horlick - known as "superwoman" when she ranSG Asset Management after having five children - said it had 9.5 per cent of its assets in two funds which placed money with Bernard L Madoff Investment Securities. Unions refuse to bow to Republican demands The Associated Press WASHINGTON - A $14 billion emergency bailout for U.S. automakers collapsed in the Senate Thursday night after the United Auto Workers refused to accede to Republican demands for swift wage cuts. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he was "terribly disappointed" about the demise of an emerging bipartisan deal to rescue Detroit's Big Three. The developments unfolded after Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky joined other GOP lawmakers in announcing his opposition to the White House-backed rescue bill passed by the House on Wednesday. He and other Republicans said wages and benefits for employees of Detroit's Big Three should be renegotiated to bring them in line with those paid by Japanese carmakers Toyota, Honda and Nissan in the United States. Hourly wages for UAW workers at GM factories are about equal to those paid by Toyota Motor Corp. at its older U.S. factories, according to the companies. GM says the average UAW laborer makes $29.78 per hour, while Toyota says it pays about $30 per hour. But the unionized factories have far higher benefit costs. GM says its total hourly labor costs are now $69, including wages, pensions and health care for active workers, plus the pension and health care costs of more than 432,000 retirees and spouses. Russian mine blast kills 12 workers

December 12, 2008 - 5:13PM Twelve workers have been killed and four injured in a mine explosion in Russia's northern Murmansk region, Interfax news agency says, citing emergency officials. The blast took place late on Thursday when explosives accidentally detonated during excavation work at an apatite mine near Kirovsk, some 1,500km north of Moscow, the news agency said on Friday.

Apatite is a mineral often used in the making of fertilisers. "A large-scale blast was being prepared at the mine for which 55 tonnes of explosives had been laid. According to confirmed figures, 12 died and four were injured," a source at the emergency situations ministry told Interfax. Mine safety has been gravely underfunded in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the industry experiences numerous accidents each year.
