Baosteel seeks stake in Anglo mine. Sun Oct 4, 2009 4:09pm BST. LONDON (Reuters) - Chinese steel and iron ore group Baosteel has proposed to pay 1 billion pounds for a 30 percent stake in Anglo American's (AAL.L: Quote, Profile, Research) huge Minas Rio iron ore mine in Brazil, according to a report on Sunday. The Observer said any deal with Baosteel could help Anglo fend off suitor Xstrata (XTA.L: Quote, Profile, Research), which last week was told to make a formal bid for Anglo by October 20 or walk away for six months. A spokesman for Anglo declined to comment on the Observer report but reiterated the firm would consider the introduction of an investor to Minas Rio as it moves to the second phase of development of the mine.

Mittal set to quit $20bn Indian steel project. October 4 2009 19:33. Lakshmi Mittal is close to pulling out of a $20bn plan to build two large steel plants in India – the centrepiece of efforts by one of the world’s most prominent industrialists to expand in the country of his birth. Delays in persuading farmers and others to sell the land he needs for the developments in the states of Jharkand and Orissa are “unacceptable”, the chairman and main owner of the ArcelorMittal steel company told the FT. “If we cannot make progress in these two sites we will have to abandon the idea of starting the projects there and look for other places in India for our expansion,” Mr Mittal said. Although Mr Mittal said he was still committed to building at least one steel plant in India, abandoning his plan to have two sites producing between them about 24m tonnes of steel a year by around 2015 would be a big blow. It would delay by several years his plans to have a sizeable presence in India. Mr Mittal, whose company is the world’s biggest steelmaker but has very little presence in India, said people there had to be “educated” into supporting gradual industrialisation, including the need to build new steel plants on agricultural land. Persuading individuals to release land for development has long been a political problem for India, leading to government efforts to make it easier for industrialists to buy land. Last year, Tata Motors had to move its plant for its new Nano car from West Bengal to Gujarat after difficulties in getting approval for land purchases. India is well behind China in terms of steelmaking. Last year, it produced 55m tonnes. slightly more than a tenth of Chinese production. In spite of this, India is already the world’s fifth biggest country in terms of steel output. Mr Mittal, whose company has been working on its planned Indian plants for more than two years, thinks that by 2020 India will be making four times as much steel as it does now. Even though this year world steel output is likely to be 10-15 per cent down on last year as a result of the recession, in India 2009 production is expected to be well ahead of last year’s. ArcelorMittal said that if it decided to abandon plans for the two sites, for which preparatory work has been under way for two years, the financial effect would be “negligible” since no land had so far been acquired and no building work done.

Aviva plans partial float of Delta Lloyd in November. Aviva, Britain's second-biggest insurer, said it expected the partial floatation of Delta Lloyd, its Dutch unit, to be completed in November.Published: 9:59AM BST 05 Oct 2009. The company said in August it planned to bring the business to market when market conditions allowed. Aviva aims to use the proceeds to restructure its balanace sheet and "explore other opportunities for growth". Delta Lloyd said the IPO would "provide the opportunity to consider consolidation options which the Delta Lloyd Group foresees in the Netherlands and Belgium". It will list on the Euronext Amsterdam exchange. Aviva will sell a minority holding but gave no indication about how much of its stake it plans to sell. Reuters, citing sources familiar with the IPO plans, reported that Aviva wanted to raise around €1bn (£910m) through the sale of a 25pc stake. This suggests a €4bn valuation for the business as a whole.

Two teenage girls die after 125ft plunge from Erskine Bridge. Two teenage girls have died after jumping 125ft hand-in-hand into a river from the Erskine Bridge near Glasgow.The pair fell from the road bridge shortly before 9pm on Sunday. They were seen holding hands as they leapt from the bridge. Police said they were still trying to establish their identities. They were pulled from the River Clyde near the bridge after a search involving police, fire and rescue services, a coastguard helicopter and the Ministry of Defence. They were then taken to the Southern General Hospital in a Ministry of Defence helicopter. Fire appliances from Clydebank, Knightswood, Polmadie and Renfrew Community Fire Stations, and two fire rescue boats were sent to the scene to assist with the search and rescue effort on the water and along the shoreline. A coastguard helicopter was also sent to the scene, and pulled one of the women from the water. The second woman was located by a Strathclyde Fire and Rescue boat and removed with the help of a police boat. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said it had been contacted by Strathclyde Police to help with the search for the two women. The Erskine Bridge connects Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire and is a notorious suicide spot.
