Randgold Resources benefited from a rising gold price, up 333p to £40.22, while copper, zinc and nickel were also higher on hopes of renewed demand from China. This helped lift Vedanta Resources 64p to £16.95 and Kazakhmys by 28p to 948p. Lonmin rose 81p to £14.42 following suggestions that Xstrata, which holds about 25% of the platinum producer, could return with an offer for the company it failed to buy last year. Since then Xstrata, up 38.5p to 817.5p, has made a merger approach to Anglo American, 53p higher at £19.44, but this has been rejected and analysts at RBC Capital believe it may instead turn its attentions back to Lonmin. RBC moved its recommendation on Lonmin from sector perform to outperform, saying: "We believe the key factor differentiating Lonmin from the other majors is that Takeover Panel restrictions on a potential acquisition by Xstrata end in early October 2009. With an Xstrata-Anglo American merger looking ever less likely, we believe a Lonmin acquisition looks more so." Despite the strength in the miners, the FTSE 100 lacked direction for much of the day and finally closed 20.80 points lower at 4796.75. Analysts at UBS recently mentioned the company as one of those which may tap shareholders for cash, given its near-£6bn pension deficit and capital investment needs. One firm which did come to the market for money was Bovis Homes. It lost 11.5p to 497p as it raised £60m for land purchases with a placing at 500p a share. Electronic component distributor Premier Farnell was down 16p to 147p after reporting a 10% drop in second-quarter profit to £16.2m. Aim-listed Ten Alps ended 4p higher at 30p after it signed a three-year distribution deal with BBC Worldwide for its productions. House broker Canaccord Adams said: "Although the terms of the deal have been kept confidential, we believe they are more favourable to Ten Alps than its previous distribution deal with RDF Rights."

Также он заявил, что ему надоело «всем врать». ОАО «Совфрахт» отставка принята. «Морской Бюллетень- Совфрахт» продолжит свою работу в прежнем режиме, но с учетом намеченных ранее преобразований. A journalist who broke the story of a Russian cargo ship apparently hijacked by pirates announced he had fled Russia, fearing for his life. Mikhail Voitenko, editor of the online maritime bulletin Sovfracht, said he had left the country after receiving a menacing late-night phone call. Voitenko said an unidentified man called him on the night of 1 September and warned him he was "stepping on the heels of some serious people". Speaking from Istanbul, where he is now in hiding, Voitenko said he was bluntly informed that these "guys are out for revenge. I was told: 'They are very unhappy with you. But they don't want unpleasantness'." Voitenko said the man urged him to leave Russia as rapidly as possible. Speaking by phone to the Guardian, he said he was intending to stay out of the country until "things calmed down". Voitenko was the first person to report on the disappearance of the Arctic Sea, which mysteriously vanished after passing through the Channel on 28 July, carrying a £1.1m cargo of Finnish timber. Russia says hijackers seized the ship four days earlier in international waters near Sweden. It says its navy recovered the boat on 17 August in the Cape Verde islands, off the west coast of Africa. Russia has charged eight people, mostly Estonians, with kidnapping and piracy. The story has dominated the Russian press, which has identified most of the kidnappers as ethnic Russians, and has even called in experts to identify the men from their criminal tattoos. Voitenko, however, has repeatedly cast doubt on the official version of events. The main source of information on the hijacking in the early days of the crisis, he has hinted that the ship may have been carrying a secret shipment of weapons, or, he suggested, "something much more expensive and dangerous". Sounding distinctly frightened, Voitenko today said he did not know the identity of his mystery caller. But he hinted that the man who spoke with a "chilling voice" may have represented the FSB, Russia's powerful and secretive post-KGB spy agency. He also said that Russia was "deliberately covering up this mystery". Asked what was really hidden on board the Arctic Sea, he replied cryptically: "Half of those involved in this were private individuals. But half were linked with the state." All 15 Russian sailors involved in the drama were released unharmed. So far, however, they have failed to give a convincing account of what happened, with even Russia's investigative committee head, Alexander Bastrykin, admitting last week that the ship "might have been carrying not only timber". Adding further intrigue, Russian chief of general staff, Nikolai Makarov, said the vessel would be searched for a possible secret cargo when it returns to Russia later this month. A oposição fala de limites à democracia. José Sócrates nega qualquer envolvimento e pede explicações aos espanhóis. A suspensão do Jornal Nacional de Sexta-feira e a consequente demissão em bloco da direcção de informação da TVI gerou o facto político mais grave da campanha eleitoral. As reacções não se fizeram esperar, contra o primeiro-ministro e o seu Governo, acusados de "controleiros" e de fazerem "atentados à liberdade de expressão". Na véspera de Manuela Moura Guedes voltar à antena com o seu Jornal Nacional das sextas-feiras, a administração da TVI, controlada pela Media Capital, decidiu suspender o programa, forçando assim a demissão em bloco da direcção chefiada por João Maia Abreu, e que contava com Mário Moura e a própria Moura Guedes. KIEV, September 4 (RIA Novosti) - A group of unknown assailants have attempted to seized the office of Ukraine's largest brandy producer, the UNIAN news agency said on Friday. The incident occurred on Thursday evening in the city of Nova Kakhovka in south Ukraine's Kherson Region when armed men tried to take control of the Tavriya factory office. Shots were fired and stun grenades were used in the assault, which left an unconfirmed number of people injured, some of them seriously. Police later detained some 150 people outside the factory's office. The entire Nova Kakhovka police force took part in the operation. The investigation into the incident is being handled by the head of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, Yuriy Lutsenko. Tavriya is currently in the midst of a shareholder dispute.
