1). Ferrero family abandons Cadbury plan. January 13 2010 12:24. The Italian family that owns Ferrero, famous for its Rocher chocolates and Nutella spread, has decided to abandon its plan to join the takeover battle for Cadbury after weeks of debate among family members. Ferrero had been considering a counter-offer for Cadbury, either with private equity groups or with an industrial partner such as Hershey of the US, that would trump the hostile £10.4bn bid from Kraft, which is being fiercely resisted by the UK confectioner’s top executives. However, Michele Ferrero, the patriarch of the family and chairman of the Italian chocolate maker, is understood to have rejected a push by younger family members to join the bidding battle. People familiar with the situation said he had decided that any move for Cadbury would be too disruptive and involve taking on too much debt. Any offer by Ferrero would have to be in cash because it is privately held and does not have shares to offer. The group had lined up €4.5bn of financing commitments from banks in the event that it participated in any counter-offer. But Ferrero has never made an acquisition and is described by bankers in Milan as perhaps the most conservatively run of Italy’s leading family-controlled businesses. The bankers said there were weeks of argument and discussion between Mr Ferrero, 85, and Pietro and Giovanni Ferrero, his two sons who are co-chief executives, over whether to participate in the Cadbury battle. That would mean there would be no imminent consolidation of the global chocolate and confectionery market, and therefore no immediate threat to Ferrero’s position. A Cimpor informa em comunicado que a concretização da operação proposta encontra-se sujeita à verificação de determinadas condições, incluindo "a aquisição pelo grupo Camargo Corrêa, de uma participação entre 15% e 25% do capital social da Cimpor". Esta posição deverá ser comprada, em bloco, a um dos accionistas da Cimpor, uma vez que a Camargo descarta uma OPA e diz que a compra não tem de passar por uma operação feita em bolsa. "A aquisição não terá lugar através de oferta pública e não ocorrerá necessariamente em operação de mercado", explica a Cimpor no mesmo documento. A Camargo Corrêa apresentou hoje uma proposta de fusão "preliminar e não vinculativa" com a Cimpor, prometendo um dividendo extraordinário de até 350 milhões. España revalida su liderazgo mundial en donación de órganos
Publicado el 11-01-2010 , por A. Gómez. Madrid. El sistema español de donación y trasplante de órganos es uno de los motivos de 'orgullo patrio' de las autoridades sanitarias. No es para menos: en 2009, España superó los 1.600 donantes con los que se realizaron 4.000 trasplantes, una cifra con la que revalida, por decimoctavo año consecutivo, su liderazgo mundial en este campo. Los máximos han sido históricos en injerto renal (2.328) y pulmón (219). Y otro récord: el pasado 28 de marzo, se realizaron 32 trasplantes con órganos procedentes de 13 donantes, un operativo que fue coordinado por la Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT) y en el que intervinieron 23 hospitales, ocho Comunidades Autónomas, siete aeropuertos civiles y militares y sies compañías aéreas. Lo que sí ha cambiado es el perfil del donante, que ya no se corresponde con el de un joven fallecido por accidente de tráfico. El año pasado, el 45% de los donantes había superado los 60 años de edad y el 64% había muerto a causa de una hemorragia cerebral y sólo el 8,7% en accidente de carretera. En cuanto a la lista de espera, el director de la ONT, Rafael Matesanz, indicó ayer que “hay 5.400 personas en espera de un órgano (el colectivo más numeroso es el de riñón), un dato que es muy positivo porque la población aumenta mientras que la lista de espera disminuye”. En cuanto a los tiempos, oscilan entre los dos meses para el corazón y los 20 meses del riñón. El cirujano plástico Pedro Cavadas también ha entrado en el ránking de los trasplantes al realizar el octavo injerto mundial de cara y el primero en incluir lengua y mandíbula. El paciente, cuya identidad no ha trascendido, “esta verdaderamente encantado”, subrayó Matesanz. Durante la presentación de los datos, la ministra de Sanidad, Trinidad Jiménez, explicó que de los 37 millones de dosis adquirida de vacuna contra la gripe A, “sólo se han servido 13 millones de dosis, de los que nueve se han repartido entre las Comunidades Autónomas y el resto pertenece a la reserva estratégica”.
Jiménez aseguró que cuando se adquirieron las dosis de vacunas, el Gobierno acordó con los laboratorios poder suspender parte del pedido, de forma que, finalmente, “de los 170 millones de euros presupuestados inicialmente para este fin, se han gastado 90 millones”. I started last year’s preamble to the PolishedPrices overall index forecast with the following observation: “It is said that at the moment there are two types of forecasters. Those who don’t know what is going to happen, and those who don’t know that they don’t know what is going to happen.” Despite that, and putting myself firmly in the first camp, last years forecast proved to be remarkably close to what actually happened, both in terms of the level that the overall index finished at, and in terms of the turning points in its path throughout the year. In many ways, despite this time last year the world being in the centre of an unprecedented financial meltdown, at the start of this year there are more uncertainties as to how the coming twelve months will progress. In January last year, the lack of liquidity had brought both the polished and the rough markets to a virtual standstill. Towards the end of last year, shortages of rough coming onto the market pushed rough prices to levels unjustified by the prevailing price of polished. There is still a great deal of price resistance from the retail end of the pipeline, and it is far from clear that manufacturers will be able to pass on their extra costs. Early anecdotal reports for the US seem to suggest that the holiday period was an improvement on last year, but was still much lower than the years prior to that. That being said, however, consumer demand should have been enough to make the US retailers begin to start looking to replenish their stocks, creating a forward ripple. Other markets, especially the emerging Asian markets, appear to be performing well, so we can are expecting to see some sustainable price growth throughout the year. Our central forecast is that prices will grow during the first few months of the year, before steadying during the summer, followed by a further surge through the autumn.
This forecast leaves the overall index at the end of 2010 at 123.0, 6% above the starting level, and the average for the whole of 2010,5.5% above the average for 2009. 'Thousands dead' in Haiti quake. Wednesday, January 13 08:33 am. Thousands of people are feared dead after a powerful earthquake struck Haiti's capital, leaving tens of thousands homeless and buried beneath rubble. Dead and injured lay in the streets of Port-au-Prince after the earthquake hit the impoverished Caribbean country on Tuesday, toppling a range of buildings from shacks to United Nations buildings and the presidential palace. The tremor, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, struck at 4.53pm (2153 GMT) about 10 miles west of Port-au-Prince at a depth of five miles and is said to be the most powerful to hit the country in more than 200 years.

Cientista da Fundação Champalimaud ganha maior prémio europeu. Zachary Mainen, cientista da Fundação Champalimaud, acaba de ganhar uma bolsa de €2,3 milhões do European Research Council, tornando-se no segundo cientista a trabalhar em Portugal a conquistar o maior prémio científico europeu. Zachary Mainen, coordenador do Programa de Neurociência da Fundação Champalimaud no Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, acaba de ganhar o primeiro prémio de Ciências da Vida do European Research Council(ERC), considerado o Nobel europeu. O prémio, no valor de 2,3 milhões de euros, já tinha sido conquistado em 2008 na área da Engenharia pela cientista portuguesa Elvira Fortunato, da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, devido à invenção dos transístores e memórias em papel. Com a duração de cinco anos, a bolsa do ERC servirá para apoiar o estudo das funções biológicas da serotonina, um dos temas mais enigmáticos nas Neurociências. A serotonina é um neurotransmissor que permite a comunicação entre os neurónios do nosso cérebro. O objectivo de Mainen e da sua equipa é descobrir o papel da serotonina no controlo de comportamentos vitais como comer, dormir ou respirar, e nas perturbações psiquiátricas associadas, como a ansiedade, a depressão, a enxaqueca ou as disfunções alimentares. Em Portugal desde 2007. Segundo o cientista laureado, "medicamentos anti-depressivos como o Prozac aumentam o nível de serotonina no cérebro, mas ainda pouco se sabe sobre o que leva o cérebro a libertar a sua própria serotonina, ou como é que isso afecta o funcionamento do sistema nervoso". Zachary Mainen acrescenta que os estudos a desenvolver pela sua equipa "poderão ter aplicações clínicas e contribuir para o desenvolvimento de drogas mais eficazes no tratamento de perturbações do comportamento, e até mesmo de terapias genéticas mais avançadas" O ERC é o mais importante organismo europeu de apoio à Ciência. Nesta segunda edição do prémio Advanced Investigator Grant houve 512 candidaturas provenientes de países de toda a Europa.

Cмерть в гостинице «Славянка» - Уверен, что странная череда этих убийств давно бы должна привлечь внимание ФСБ, - поделился в разговоре с «Аргументами неделi» независимый военный эксперт, к.э.н. Юрий Бобылов. - Слишком уж много всего непонятного. А список погибших - очень длинный. Директор НИИ антимикробной химиотерапии, эксперт Всемирной организации здравоохранения, профессор Леонид Страчунский погиб в 741-м номере гостиницы «Славянка» (она принадлежит Министерству обороны РФ. - «АН») летом 2005 года. Профессор приехал из Смоленска и уже на следующий день должен был улетать в США на международный конгресс. Он погиб от удара тяжелым предметом по голове. Из номера исчез ноутбук. Смерть Страчунского совпала по времени с массовой эпидемией гепатита А в Тверской губернии (пострадали более 300 человек). Одна из версий возникновения эпидемии - применение биологического оружия. Институт Страчунского занимался как раз этими проблемами. Такой же странной была смерть известного уральского ученого, лауреата Госпремии РФ д.т.н., профессора Сергея Вовка. Он умер 13 июля 2005 г. на железнодорожном вокзале в Екатеринбурге от отравления клофелином. Профессор Вовк занимался инертным газом ксеноном. Последний его труд - «Использование ксенона в качестве радиопротектора». Расследованием смерти профессора Вовка занимались столичные пинкертоны, но выйти на след киллеров так и не удалось. Убийства не раскрыты. Вирус доктора Мальцевой Некоторое время назад ЦРУ обвинило известного российского ученого Нелли Мальцеву в передаче Ираку вируса оспы, который может использоваться Багдадом как бактериологическое оружие. Этот особо опасный вид вируса устойчив к действию вакцин. ЦРУ полагало, что при помощи ракет иракские военные могут переправлять вирус на большие расстояния. Американская разведка получила сведения об этом от своего осведомителя. Информация долго держалась в секрете, пока ее не раскрыли журналисты газеты The New York Times. Член специального Между на родного комитета по ортопоксвирусам, российский профессор Светлана Маренникова заметила, что доктор Мальцева зарекомендовала себя «порядочным человеком» и все попытки превратить ее в шпиона просто абсурдны. Директор НИИ вирусных препаратов РАМН Ви талий Зверевзаявил, что доктор Мальцева последние 20 лет профессиональной деятельности руководила лабораторией, занимавшейся диагностикой таких «мирных» инфекций, как герпес, корь, краснуха и паратит. В конце января 2002 г. забит битами директор НИИ психологии РАН Андрей Брушлинский, руководитель исследований по борьбе с терроризмом пси-методами. В похищенном портфеле Брушлинского были труды по новейшим методам поиска террористов. Эти материалы профессор должен был отправить в Пентагон. За несколько месяцев до гибели Брушлинского был убит его заместитель - профессор Валерий Дружинин. Через несколько дней после похорон Брушлинского был забит битами заведующий кафедрой микробиологии РГМУ профессор Валерий Коршунов, специалист по биооружию и методам контроля пси-воздействия. Профессор Коршунов был одним из ведущих российских микробиологов. Его разработки активно использовались в лабораториях России, США и Канады. Проректор Всероссийской государственной налоговой академии Министерства по налогам и сборам, ученый-специалист в области пси-защиты Эльдар Мамедов тоже был убит бейсбольными битами. Потом был убит военный ученый-психолог Михаил Ионов. Из его портфеля были похищены материалы «Интеллектуальная поддержка принятия решения в рефлексивном управлении противником». Юрий Андропов приказал создать Главный центр психотроники. Основные лаборатории размещались в подземных сооружениях, в 30 км от Чернобыльской АЭС. В них были разработаны несколько типов психотропных генераторов. Мощные радиолокационные комплексы загоризонтного действия имели прямое отношение к проблемам психотроники. Входящие в их состав решетки антенн работали на излучение, управляя тета-дельта-ритмами мозга. Задачи отрабатывались на двух загоризонтных станциях - Чернобыльской и Красноярской. Обе станции входили вединую психотропную систему с кодовым названием «Шар». Ведущий конструктор секретного НИИ Борис Крутиков участ вовал в создании мощного пси-генератора «Градиент-4». Тело профессора было обнаружено в квартире дома № 4 по улице Столетова. Орудие преступления - обычный кухонный нож. Следом пришло сообщение об убийстве 59-летнего профессора Академии народного хозяйства при Правительстве РФ Николая Валягина. Тело профессора было найдено в его квартире на улице Металлургов. Профессора тоже убили кухонным ножом. В сентябре 2005 г. был вынесен приговор по делу об убийстве 57 летней Ирины Проскуряковой, профессора Санкт-Петер бург ского горного института. В деле не было ни очевидцев преступления, ни отпечатков пальцев. В Санкт-Петербурге был убит и старший научный сотрудник Института антропологии и этнографии, ведущий российский эксперт по проблемам межнацио нальных отношений Николай Гиренко. Он был ученым с мировым именем. Книга Николая Гиренко «Социология племени» стала подлинным открытием в науке о межэтнических отношениях. Убийства не раскрыты. В деле всплыла подлодка «Курск» В конце лета 2002 г. весь Красноярск говорил о загадочном исчезновении профессора Бахвалова. Известный ученый-химик Сер гей Бахвалов ушел из дома и не вернулся.
Он возглавлял кафедру физической химии Крас ноярского государственного университета и одновременно являлся руководителем научно-исследовательского центра «Кристалл», который занимался переработкой радиоактивных отходов.Профессор Бахвалов изобрел уникальный метод переработки топлива на атомных подводных лодках и выиграл тендер на утилизацию затонувшей подводной атомарины «Курск». В середине октября 2003 г. бесследно пропал ученый-ядерщик - заместитель начальника центральной заводской лаборатории Горно-химического комбината 46-летний Сергей Подойницын. По данным спецслужб, По дой ницын имел доступ к секретным документам. Nuclear scientist killed by motorcycle bomb in Iran. Iran today accused American and Israeli agents of assassinating a leading nuclear scientist who worked as a professor at Tehran University. Massaoud Ali-Mohammadi was killed near his home in northern Tehran this morning by a booby-trapped motorcycle. The state broadcaster IRIB blamed the attack on "Zionist and American agents". "The assassination of Mr Massoud Ali-Mohammadi, a nuclear scientist and a committed and revolutionary Tehran University professor, was detonated by a remote control," IRIB said on its website. "As a result of the bomb planted by Zionist and American agents two cars and a motorcycle were severely damaged and the windows in the surrounding residential units were shattered." Iran is embroiled in a bitter dispute with the West over its nuclear ambitions. The Islamic Republic denies Western accusations it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. A senior Interior Ministry official, Mehdi Mohammadifar, said earlier that the motive for the bombing was under investigation. "Apparently this man was a university professor who was killed close to his home this morning in an explosion," Mr Mohammadifar said. The official IRNA news agency said it was not yet clear how many people were killed in the blast, suggesting there may be more than one victim. Iran has been convulsed by its most serious domestic unrest since the Islamic revolution in 1979, as protests by opposition supporters against the election result have turned violent. Icelanders are ashamed of the reckless behaviour of privately owned banks and business people from their country. They are full of guilt that people lost money due to the activities of these bankers. Iceland is a small community with just over 317,000 inhabitants, about the size of Newcastle. Most Icelanders had never heard about the Icesave internet bank until it hit the country like a financial tsunami, an unwelcome addition to the meltdown of its economy. The amount demanded by the British and Dutch governments from Icelandic taxpayers to pay for Icesave amounts to 50 per cent of Iceland’s gross domestic product. This is equivalent to a bill of €12,000 ($17,000, £11,000) per person, all because of the bankruptcy of a privately owned bank, Landsbanki. The interest on top of this is an eye-watering annual rate of 5.55 per cent. A year’s interest equals the running cost of the Icelandic healthcare system for six months. Most Icelanders acknowledge that the government of Iceland failed in its duties. Its banking governance failed, as did its regulatory framework; but in those failings Iceland was not alone. Ben Bernanke, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, has admitted that US financial regulations were too lax. As the Swedish Riksbank has noted, the Icelandic, British and Dutch financial regulators bear joint responsibility for the Icesave debacle. However, the British and Dutch regulators have not acknowledged their failings – indeed, they have washed their hands of guilt. The European Union did the same – after naively assuming a local deposit guarantee scheme would protect savers in what had become a single European market. The solution for the future must lie in a pan-European guarantee scheme. As the Banque de France and others have concluded, the EU deposit guarantees were not able to tackle a systemic banking collapse. Will Iceland honour its obligations? Yes, Iceland has for eleven hundred years honoured its international legal obligations and will continue to do so. The Althing, the Icelandic parliament – in Churchill’s words “the grandmother of all parliaments” – confirmed in December 2008 that it will take on the Icesave obligation in a resolution. The Althing approved legislation for a state guarantee for the Icesave payments in August 2009 – but with some safeguards for Iceland’s economy. These safeguards made the agreement more balanced and in greater accordance with the so-called Brussels conditions, which were agreed in November 2008 with the UK and the Netherlands and stipulated that negotiations “shall be conducted in a co-ordinated and consistent way, and shall take into account the unprecedented difficult situation of Iceland and therefore the necessity of finding arrangements that allow Iceland to restore its financial system and its economy”. The president of Iceland signed the August 2009 bill into law with the safeguards, including a cap on payments as a proportion of GDP growth, but Iceland has not received any formal reaction from the British or Dutch governments on these safeguards. This legislation will remain in force even if the people of Iceland reject, in the forthcoming referendum, the new Icesave legislation that was amended to remove the safeguards in accordance with backroom demands from the UK and Netherlands. Heineken makes £4.8bn swoop on Femsa to capture Sol drinkers in Mexico. Heineken has agreed to buy the Mexican brewer of Sol lager for €5.3bn (£4.8bn) to expand its emerging markets business.Published: 12:00PM GMT 11 Jan 2010The Dutch brewer will buy the beer business of Fomento Economico Mexicano SAB (Femsa) in an all-shares deal, which gives the Mexican company a 20pc stake in Heineken. “Through this deal we become a much stronger, more competitive player in Latin America, one of the world’s most profitable and fastest growing beer markets,” Heineken chief executive Jean-François van Boxmeer said. Heineken’s shares rose after it announced the deal, as analysts praised the takeover for reducing Heineken’s reliance on western Europe, where beer consumption is in decline. Heineken bought the UK business of Scottish & Newcastle in 2008 to become the biggest brewer in this country. SABMiller, the world’s second-largest brewer, was also interested in Femsa but reportedly pulled out of the race when it became clear Heineken’s offer was higher than it was willing to match. Brewers have been joining forces in recent years, to cut costs as the amount of beer drunk in developed markets such as Europe and the US has continued to fall. The world’s biggest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev, was formed from the merger of Budweiser maker Anheuser and InBev, the Belgian brewer of Stella Artois and Becks, in 2008. Heineken will issue new shares to pay for the deal and give the stake to Femsa. The brewer will issue 86m new shares to Femsa when the deal closes and a further 29m shares within five years. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of this year. Heineken will take over all of Femsa’s brewing operations in Mexico and the 83pc of Femsa’s Brazilian beer business which it did not already own. The valuation of €5.3bn includes €1.5bn of net debt and pension obligations as well as the equity value of €3.8bn. The company expects to achieve cost savings of €150m a year by 2013 as a result of the takeover. Femsa’s beer revenue was €2.6bn in 2008. Femsa still has a soft-drinks business, Coca-Cola Femsa, and owns Mexico’s largest chain of convenience stores, Oxxo. Heineken said the deal bolsters its position in three of the world’s four most profitable beer markets - Mexico, Brazil and the US, the no.1 market. As well as the Mexican and Brazilian businesses, Femsa exports brands such as Dos Equis to the US, where Hispanic consumers are one of the fastest-growing beer-drinking sections of the population. Heineken already distributes some Femsa brands in the US. The company sees potential to export more Femsa brands to the UK and the rest of Europe. Heineken also hopes to sell more of its own lager in Latin America through Femsa’s distribution network.

A group of Russian oligarchs are priming their companies for multi-billion dollar London listings in a sign the City remains the favoured financial centre for the country’s tycoons as they try to rebuild fortunes devastated by the crisis.
Sergey Popov and Andrey Melnichenko, the owners of Russia’s biggest coal producer Suek, will appoint banking advisers this week for a stock market listing in London and Moscow that could value the business at up to $9bn, according to people close to the company. ProfMedia, one of Russia’s largest media groups controlled by the magnate Vladimir Potanin, has also mandated Bank of America-Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse for a London listing that could achieve a market value of up to $2bn. Both listings are expected to launch in the second half of the year. Bankers see the return of large Russian companies to London as confirmation that the City remains attractive as an international financial centre for Russia’s richest business people after the capital missed out on the flotation of Oleg Deripaska’s aluminium company Rusal to Hong Kong. After months of negotiations the Hong Kong Stock Exchange granted conditional approval last month for the Rusal offering but restrictions have been imposed by regulators on private investor participation. “Deripaska’s experience has raised a warning flag to Russian companies thinking about listing somewhere else from London,” said Chris Weafer, chief strategist at UralSib. The collapse in share and commodities prices in 2008 cut sharply the fortunes of many of Russia’s wealthiest tycoons. The total value of Mr Potanin’s assets fell from $19.3bn in 2008 to $2.1bn in 2009, according to Forbes magazine. Mr Popov’s fortune fell from $6.4bn to $2.4bn in the same period, while Mr Melnichenko’s net worth fell from $6.2bn to $1bn, according to Forbes. One person familiar with the Suek deal said a float of about 25 per cent of the company was envisaged and that the Russian state-controlled bank VTB and Citigroup had been chosen provisionally to co-ordinate the deal. Several other banks, including BoA-Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, UBS and Credit Suisse, are on a shortlist for the final roles. The London shares of Suek are expected to be issued as global depositary receipts, securities representing shares of a company traded on a different stock exchange that allow foreign companies to attract a wider range of international investors than a local listing.

Ferrero unwraps plan for $4.5bn loan to join Cadbury bid party. January 11, 2010. Ferrero moved a step closer to gate crashing the £10.5 billion bid battle for Cadbury last night after the Italian chocolate maker lined up a bumper loan that could be used to back an offer for the British confectionery group. Ferrero, which makes Nutella spreads and Kinder chocolate eggs, is talking to the Italian bank Mediobanca about taking on a $4.5 billion (£2.8 billion) loan that would be syndicated to at least four other big lenders, according to local reports. The loan would be structured in two tranches and would most likely be extended to a new company controlled by Ferrero, reports said. Other banks considering taking part in the loan are thought to include domestic players Intesa Sanpaolo and Unicredit. Ferrero, which in November said it was considering its options over a potential bid for Cadbury, has until February 2 to table a formal offer. Cadbury is fending off a hostile cash and shares bid from Kraft of the US. It has repeatedly dismissed the bid as “derisory” but it remains the only formal offer on the table. Ferrero, which also makes Ferrero Rocher chocolates, has been tipped as more likely to join forces with another bidder, such as Hershey of the US, rather than try to mount a counter-bid for Cadbury on its own. The difficulties of agreeing partnerships and lining up funding were last week said to be dampening both companies’ interest in launching a rival bid, but the emergence of the loan for Ferrero suggests it is still a possibility. Reports yesterday said the Italian chocolatier had still not made up its mind about a bid. Ferrero could not be reached for comment last night. The takeover battle for Cadbury, which has been raging since Kraft made its first informal approach in September, is at a turning point. Cadbury will this week publish its final defense against Kraft’s bid, which is expected to focus on the American company’s poor share price performance since its demerger from the Philip Morris tobacco giant in 2001. Kraft shares, worth $31 at the time of the demerger, were changing hands for just above $27 last week. Cadbury will also this week publish its final results for the past year, which are expected to show encouraging growth in sales and profits. Cadbury has already said it is confident that it can increase its annual revenues by between 5 per cent and 7 per cent. It is also aiming to increase profit margins to at least 16 per cent by 2013. Double-digit dividend growth is promised. Cadbury shares closed last week at 778p, higher than the current value of Kraft’s offer, with shareholders making it clear that the American group must bid at least 800p a share for any chance of success. Kraft has already improved its offer once, increasing the cash component of its bid to 360p a share last week and is thought to be looking at ways of raising the offer further. However, it has come under pressure, not least from Warren Buffett, whose Berkshire Hathaway investment group is its largest shareholder, not to overpay. Mr Buffett’s company said last week that it had voted against a Kraft proposal to issue 370 million additional shares to fund its offer for Cadbury. He said that he would make a final decision about whether to approve a share issue once Kraft had tabled its final offer. Kraft is expected to wait until late next week before making its move. It has until January 19 to present its best bid, with a deadline for acceptances in early February. Cadbury has already made it clear that it believes a combination with Hershey would be a better fit for the two companies. Over the weekend, Roger Carr, Cadbury chairman, said that Mr Buffett’s intervention was “embarrassing” for Kraft and raised question marks over its ability to materially increase its current offer.

O Instituto Nacional de Emergência Médica (INEM) confirmou ao PÚBLICO que os feridos são todos ligeiros.Junto ao circo, as autoridades colocaram dois pontos de atendimento e num deles já foram enviados para os hospitais de São José, Dona Estefânia e Santa Maria 15 pessoas com ferimentos ligeiros, muitos deles com escoriações. Em declarações à Lusa, Daniel, um funcionário do Circo Chen, disse que na zona que cedeu estariam cerca de cem espectadores, “a bancada com menos pessoas”. “Não sabemos explicar o que aconteceu. Sabemos que há pessoas com alguns arranhões e feridos, mas nada grave”, sublinhou o funcionário, acrescentando que todas as sessões de hoje foram canceladas. Os espectadores da sessão das 17h30 estavam a sentar-se nos seus lugares quando “a bancada superior deslizou toda num efeito de dominó. Via-se as pessoas a ficar debaixo das bancadas”, explicou à Lusa Ana Teixeira, que tinha ido ao circo com o marido e o filho. Bomb explodes in central Athens. Athens A small bomb has exploded outside the Greek parliament in one of the busiest areas of the capital, Athens. The blast blew out some of the parliament building's windows but no-one was injured in the attack, blamed on left-wing militant groups. Police were able to clear the area around the building after receiving a 15-minute warning ahead of the blast. The bomb was placed in a rubbish bin close to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in Constitution Square. Ceremonial guards protecting the tomb refused to leave their posts. Austerity measures. The attack is likely to be the work of one of a number of domestic militant groups, spawned after the riots of December 2008. Their anti-establishment campaign has recently changed direction to retaliate against the socialist government's austerity measures, aimed at resolving Greece's economic crisis. Though the attack may have caused little physical damage, it will trouble international financial experts monitoring Greece. Ratings agencies have warned they will downgrade the country's credit-worthiness again if there is social unrest or if the government fails to persuade the country to accept a programme of cuts. The bombers' message could not have been clearer - especially as parliament was sitting at the time - they were saying they could strike with impunity against one of the most heavily guarded buildings in the country.
