He is now at the end of that road.” Between 1988 and 1993 Mr Schreiber worked for Airbus, the European aerospace consortium, and Thyssen, the German steel and engineering group that has since merged with Krupp. During that time German prosecutors allege he received millions in undeclared commissions, including for facilitating the sale of 36 tanks to Saudi Arabia. Marc Odebrecht, who has been in charge of the Wismar and Warnemünde yards since they sought bankruptcy protection in June, has been seeking agreement with Sweden’s Stena Line on completing two vessels currently under construction. The ships are among the last four orders under construction at the company’s yards, on Germany’s Baltic coast. Mr Odebrecht announced on Friday that he had secured €190m ($266m) of bankruptcy financing to allow work on the remaining uncompleted ships to continue, with 90 per cent of the money guaranteed by Germany’s federal government and the remainder by banks. However, Stena Line insisted there remained no agreement over what to do about completing the ships. Lars Rosumek, Mr Odebrecht’s spokesman, said Wadan Yards was seeking a commitment from Stena to buy the outstanding ships at the agreed price, to allow the work to go ahead. The company believed it could complete the two vessels on time. “From our side, we have done everything humanly possible to allow this work to go ahead and preserve these jobs,” Mr Rosumek said. The yards’ future is further complicated by STX Europe’s decision to sell its remaining stake in Wadan Yards’ holding company to a Luxembourg company. STX Europe said only that the shares had been sold to Luxembourg-based Mandataria Finance. Mr Rosumek declined to comment on the sale.

German shipyards fail despite state loans Monday June 8, 10:30 PM. Two of Germany's largest shipyards have sought bankruptcy protection in spite of having received substantial loans under Germany's economic stimulus plan this year. Wadan Yards MTW, which operates shipyards in Wismar and Warnemünde on Germany's Baltic Sea coast, filed for protection from its creditors on Friday, according to a statement by STX Europe (Oslo: AKY.OL - news) , which owns 30 per cent of the business. The collapse comes less than a year after the Wadan Yards group was formed when STX Europe sold off most of its holding in the yards to FLC West, an investment vehicle controlled by Russian investors Andrey Burlakov and Evgeniy Zartitsky. The company's collapse is part of a worldwide crisis facing shipbuilding as shipowners either default on payments due on orders that were placed during the sector's long boom or orders run out. Most shipping segments have seen their earnings collapse as falling demand has been exacerbated by an oversupply of ships. The yards that have filed for protection form the majority of the Wadan Yards group, which also operates shipyards in the Ukraine. No reason was given for Wadan Yards' collapse but the company, which mainly builds specialist merchant ships for oil exploration and trading in arctic conditions, is heavily exposed to oil exploration and the Russian economy. Both markets have suffered heavily in recent months from the global economic downturn. Wadan Yards announced in February it had received a €180m ($250m) loan to finance vessel construction under the German federal government's programme to support companies during the economic crisis. It had previously received €60m from the regional government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where the shipyards are situated. The group has been unusual among surviving European shipbuilders for focusing on container and other cargo ships. Most European yards construct mainly cruise ships and large ferries which are far less price-sensitive than cargo vessels, as buyers' purchase decisions tend to be based more on quality than on price. Wadan Yards was formed in July last year when STX Europe sold 70 per cent of the business to the Russian investors as it cut down its operations to focus on its core cruise ship and ferry building operations in Finland, Norway and France. Earlier in the year, STX Europe was bought by Korea's STX (011810.KS - news) , one of the world's largest shipbuilding groups.

Консолидация всего пакета акций в одних руках уже помогла компании договориться о привлечении кредита в 190 млн долл. Однако не исключено, что в будущем г-н Бурлаков продаст часть акций Wadan Yards российским судостроительным компаниям, сформированным с участием госкапитала. Несмотря на займы в размере 220 миллионов евро и гарантии займов от федерального правительства, банкротства избежать не удалось. Правительство Германии и работники верфей, 2500 сотрудников, обвиняют в банкротстве FLC West – компанию, зарегистрированную в Люксембурге и контролируемую российскими интересами. Председателю совета компании Wadan Group Андрею Бурлакову пришлось держать ответ перед 150 возмущенными сотрудниками в Висмаре, пытаясь ответить на вопросы о будущем и о задолженностях по зарплате. От сугубо компроматных до сугубо хвалебных (настолько хвалебных, что пожалуй, они возбуждают больше сомнений, чем чистый компромат). Но отвлечемся от так сказать, смутных времен периода накопления первоначального капитала. Оставим их в покое. Поговорим о настоящем. Что получается-то? Получается следующее – главной ставкой Бурлакова и Ко была и остается ставка на заказы от российских нефте и газодобывающих компаний. У меня резонный вопрос – если Бурлаков столь озабочен российскими интересами, то почему было не вложить средства, потраченные на Wadan Yards, в российское судостроение? Откуда такая легкость по жизни вообще, в принципе – вот сегодня человек крутится в российском авиастроении, а завтра (видимо, добившись в авиастроении впечатляющих успехов и желая попробовать себя на новом поприще) кидается в европейское судостроение. Которое на мой взгляд, является одним из самых тяжелых для управленца видом производства. Именно в Европе. Европейское судостроение и в недавний бум с трудом выживало, главным образом благодаря технологиям, о которых Азия может только мечтать. Благодаря строительству специализированных высокотехнологичных судов. Но в настоящее время, в условиях кризиса, европейское судостроение дышит на ладан и требует от своего руководства ювелирного мастерства в менеджменте. Я знаете ли, не верил и не верю универсальности менеджера или владельца – сегодня он авиатор, завтра судостроитель, и везде успех, везде победа. Извините, но так бывает только в кино или в средствах массовой информации, бездумно называющих предпринимателем любого, кто неведомо какими путями получил доступ к собственности. Такими победами помнится, славилась родная коммунистическая партия – сегодня коммунист назначен парторгом машиностроительного завода и приводит его из небытия к славе, завтра его перебрасывают на театр музкомедии, он и там на высоте, театр становится еще музыкальнее и еще смешнее. Чтобы добиться успехов на мировом или европейском или даже городском уровне, надо быть спецом в своем деле, крайне желательно – с соответствующим базовым образованием, и тереться в этом деле не от случая к случаю, а всю жизнь. Чтобы собственно, это дело и было твоей жизнью. Вот российский бизнес или капитал приобрел частично в собственность какого-то европейского автогиганта (Оппель что ли, не могу точно сказать, я к авто равнодушен) – само собой, после успехов Автоваза почему бы не поднять с колен захиревших европейцев. А вот прорыв в судостроении – российское судостроение настолько мощное, что сил с избытком, хватит и на Европу, поможем старушке, научим жить. В нашем обществе почему-то бытует мнение, что менеджер, он и в Африке менеджер. Что нет разницы чем управлять, что менеджмент не зависит от характера деятельности конкретной компании. Российские леонарды да винчи справятся со всем, за что только ни берутся. И базовое образование, и предыдущий опыт – роли не играют. Человек по жизни успешный менеджер, и этим сказано все. На конкретные детали управления компанией есть технические специалисты, они пусть в детальках всяких и ковыряются, по уши в масле. А менеджер победно ставит подписи под сводками бухучета с миллиардными прибылями, и сверкает лацканами смокинга на светских тусовках. Молодежь, радостно восприняв эту сказку про Иванушку-Дурачка в современном изложении, валом валит на факультеты менеджментов и экономик, где в лучшем случае их научат выражаться не жаргоном и не матами и уверенно пользоваться калькулятором в мобильнике – жизненно важная для успешного менеджера наука, без которой прибылей не подсчитать. Первопричина такой яркой многогранности – халява. Будь денежки не халявными, вряд ли с такой легкостью приобретались в Европе столь сложные предприятия. Если бы человек наладил в России производство самолетов, отодвинувших на задний план боинги и эйрбасы, то не думаю, что вдруг в один прекрасный день он продал бы это производство первому встречному и кинулся в судостроение. Я впрочем, знаю некоторые виды деятельности, не требующие никаких навыков кроме элементарных телодвижений, доступных и мартышке. Например, сидеть на вентиле и туда-сюда его крутить. Увеличивая протекание через трубу того или иного вида сырья или наоборот, сводя оное к нулю, в зависимости от действия безусловных рефлексов. И до тех пор, пока сырье востребовано и есть в наличии, благо дано оно не трудами а природой, бизнесмен будет процветающим и страсть каким успешным. Но как мне кажется, вентилей на всех нехватает, мартышек развелось больше, чем их водится во всех джунглях вместе взятых. Посему те из них, кто успел перехватить денег, но не успел приварить себя к вентилю, бросились во все подряд, думая, что после вентиля они справятся с чем угодно – ведь жутко мудреная хрень, краник-то, куда там всяким судостроениям, тем более европейской мелочевке. И заметьте – все равно ведь тянет их, новых европейцев, к халяве. Если приобретается судостроение, то стремятся заручиться заказами от российских нефти и газа. Если приобретается автомобилестроение, то тоже что-то такое патриотическое заявляют, чтобы не себя разорять, а государство. Потому что без халявки они очень быстро летят в трубу вместе с теми несчастными, кто попал в их собственность. Хочу опрокинуть на молодежь ушатик холодной воды – вы ребята, можете закончить менеджерский факультет самого престижного вуза России с самым красным дипломом, но в большие игроки большого дела не попадете, если это не дело вашей жизни и вы не знаете его от А до Я. Учитесь на примере наших замахнувшихся на европейский уровень менеджеров, с треском на всю Европу валящих одно предприятие за другим. Любое серьезное дело не терпит любительства и случайных людей. The welding of the first joint of a 1,118-mile pipeline to Eastern Russia is a historic part of a government plan for new production centers, officials say. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin joined local officials in the Russian Far East and Alexander Ananenkov, deputy chairman of the Gazprom management committee, Friday to dedicate the welding of the first joint of the Sakhalin-Khabarovsk-Vladivostok gas transmission system. "This day will go down in the Russian gas industry history," said Putin. "Welding of the first joint of the Sakhalin-Khabarovsk-Vladivostok GTS marks the start-up of the system for gas supply to Eastern Russia." The project is part of a government-backed program by Gazprom to create new gas centers in the Far East to produce 5.2 trillion cubic feet of gas by 2020, the energy monopoly reports. Gazprom faced recent criticism over its spending habits during the current economic crisis. Profits for the energy giant for the first half of the year were down more than 40 percent, though net profits for the second quarter quadrupled. Ananenkov said Gazprom projects should move forward in order to prepare for an expected rise in demand as the economy recovers. "We must be ready for that and should not give up the proposed gas industry development plans," he said. In a one-dimensional (1D) system of interacting electrons, excitations of spin and charge travel at different speeds, according to the theory of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) at low energies. However, the clear observation of this spin-charge separation is an ongoing challenge experimentally. We have fabricated an electrostatically gated 1D system in which we observe spin-charge separation and also the predicted power-law suppression of tunnelinginto the 1D system. The spin-charge separation persists even beyond the low-energy regime where the TLL approximation should hold. TLL effects should therefore also be important in similar, but shorter, electrostatically gated wires, where interaction effects are being studied extensively worldwide. The New York-based group has already filed for an IPO of Avago Technologies, the Singapore-based semiconductor company formerly known as Agilent, which it bought with Silver Lake for $2.66bn in 2005. The new IPOs would be a boost for KKR, which was founded by cousins Henry Kravis and George Roberts in 1976 and shot to fame 20 years ago with the $30bn takeover of RJR Nabisco, immortalised in the book Barbarians at the Gate. HCA was one of the biggest ever buy-outs when KKR, Bain Capital and Merrill Lynch paid $33bn for it in 2007. It runs 163 hospitals and 112 outpatient centres, generating $28.4bn of revenues last year. KKR in March valued its stake at $1.1bn. As HCA still has $26bn of debt, KKR is considering selling new shares to repay loans, rather than cashing out itself. It may do something similar with First Data, which it bought for $26bn in 2007 and has held up well in the recession, increasing adjusted earnings by 5 per cent last year. The listings will be welcome news in an industry that has suffered two poor years because of falling stock markets and the crisis-hit banking sector. KKR underlined the woes of the buy-out sector by reporting a $1.2bn loss last year.

Spin-Charge Separation. In condensed matter physics, the spin-charge separation is an unusual behavior of electrons in some materials under some special conditions that allows the electrons to behave as abound state of two independent particles, the spinon and the chargon, also known as the holon. The spinon only carries the spin of the electron but not the charge while the chargon/holon has spin equal to zero but its electric charge equals to the charge of the electron. Spin–charge separation is one of the most unusual manifestations of the concept of quasiparticles. This is really surprising because the "bare" quasiparticles are electrons, holes, phonons and photons, and all of them have the property that bosons are evenly charged and fermions are oddly charged and naively, one would think that any quasiparticle formed from these particles would also satisfy this property. Since the original electrons in the system are fermions, one of spinon and chargon has to be fermion, and the other one has to be boson. However, it is arbitrary to choose which either one to be fermionic. The formalism with bosonic chargon and fermionic spinion is usually refereed to as ""slave-fermion"" formalism, while the formalism with fermionic chargon and bosonic spinon is called the ""Schwinger boson"" formalism. Both approaches have been used for strongly correlated systems, but neither has been proved to be completely successful. One difficulty of the spin-charge separation is that, spinon and chargon are not gauge invariant quantities, i.e. unphysical objects, there is no direct physical probes to observe them. Therefore more often than not one has to use thermal dynamical or macroscopic techniques to see their effects. This implies that which formalism we choose is irrelevant to real physics, so in principle both approaches should give us the same answer. The reason we obtain radically different answers from these two formalisms is probably because of the wrong mean field solution we choose, which means that we are dealing with the spin-charge separation in a wrong way.

We have fabricated an electrostatically gated 1D system in which we observe spin-charge separation and also the predicted power-law suppression of tunnelinginto the 1D system. The spin-charge separation persists even beyond the low-energy regime where the TLL approximation should hold. TLL effects should therefore also be important in similar, but shorter, electrostatically gated wires, where interaction effects are being studied extensively worldwide.
