O presidente do Banco Espírito Santo afirmou hoje que os accionistas de referência apoiaram o aumento de capital hoje anunciado pelo banco, de 1,2 mil milhões de euros, e que este servirá para "garantir o crescimento a médio prazo". Ricardo Salgado estima que em Abril, este seja concretizado. Ricardo Salgado revelou também que “temos confirmação de vários bancos dispostos a tornar firme a operação” “Não digo que sejam favas contadas, mas temos bastante esperança de que em Abril seja concretizado”, afirmou o CEO do BES. O Banco Espírito Santo (BES) anunciou hoje que vai propor em assembleia geral de accionistas a realização de um aumento de capital. O banco liderado por Ricardo Salgado pretende obter com a operação um encaixe bruto de até 1,2 mil milhões de euros. O objectivo é reforçar os rácios de capital. O BES tinha efectuado um aumento de capital de 1,38 mil milhões de euros em 2006, o maior até agora feito por um banco português.

Polícia britânica tem um DVD que compromete Sócrates

A notícia sobre as investigações das autoridades britânicas sobre o caso Freeport e que alegadamente envolvem o primeiro-ministro, José Sócrates, estão hoje na maioria dos jornais portugueses. Os jornais revelam que as autoridades inglesas têm uma gravação onde Charles Smith diz ter distribuído luvas por várias pessoas, entre as quais Sócrates.

A notícia sobre as investigações das autoridades britânicas sobre o caso Freeport e que alegadamente envolvem o primeiro-ministro, José Sócrates, estão hoje na maioria dos jornais portugueses. Os jornais revelam que as autoridades inglesas têm uma gravação onde Charles Smith diz ter distribuído “luvas” por várias pessoas, entre as quais Sócrates. O “Diário de Notícias” revela hoje que José Sócrates consta de uma lista de suspeitos enviada pela polícia inglesa. O único indício apresentado ao Ministério Público português é uma conversa em que Charles Smith, um intermediário, afirma ter feito pagamentos a José Sócrates. O “Jornal de Notícias” adianta que existe uma carta, de Charles Smith, onde consta que Sócrates e mais 11 pessoas terão recebido “luvas” no caso Freeport. O jornal revela que Charles Smith terá tentado justificar o paradeiro de quatro milhões de euros gastos a mais com o empreendimento. O “JN” adianta que Charles Smith, um dos sócios da empresa "Smith & Pedro", chegou a citar - em conversa gravada presencialmente por um emissário do Freeport de Inglaterra, que pretendia saber o destino de quatro milhões de euros -, os nomes do tio e primo de Sócrates, um secretário de Estado, responsáveis do Instituto para a Conservação da Natureza, autarcas e inclusivamente a secretária do então ministro do Ambiente. O “Correio da Manhã” cita uma carta rogatória enviada pelas autoridades inglesas às portuguesas onde Sócrates surge como suspeito de ter “facilitado, pedido ou recebido” o pagamento de subornos no valor de cinco milhões de libras (oito milhões de euros) para a legalização do Freeport (Alcochete). Segundo o mesmo jornal diz que autoridades de Londres requerem a verificação dos movimentos bancários de Sócrates durante o período em investigação. Os britânicos dizem que detectaram um encontro, a 17 de Janeiro de 2002, entre Sócrates, que titulava a pasta do Ambiente, com Charles Smith, Manuel Pedro e Sean Collidge. Nessa altura, segundo os investigadores britânicos, terá sido discutido o pagamento de ‘luvas’. Este é o tema das manchetes das revistas “Visão” e “Sábado”, que revelaram ainda ontem, que o primeiro-ministro José Sócrates é considerado suspeito pelas autoridades inglesas, tendo solicitado informação bancária ao primeiro-ministro português. As autoridades inglesas querem saber se Sócrates terá "solicitado, recebido ou facilitado pagamentos” no âmbito do licenciamento do Freeport. Segundo a notícia da “Visão”, “a polícia britânica enviou, este mês, uma carta rogatória às autoridades portuguesas, na qual refere que José Sócrates é suspeito de ter ‘solicitado, recebido, ou facilitado pagamentos’ no âmbito do licenciamento do Freeport, em Alcochete”. Já a Sábado, no seu site, avançou ontem que na edição de hoje vai trazer uma “investigação especial” sobre as suspeitas a Sócrates, afirmando que as autoridades inglesas pedem informação bancária sobre o primeiro-ministro numa carta rogatória. A mesma revista adianta que a PJ apreendeu, na Smith&Pedro, o “email” enviado para o alegado domínio pessoal de Sócrates e que os investigadores procuram 2 milhões de euros e solicitaram a dois bancos portugueses dados sobre offshores do tio de Sócrates.

Toyota to recall more than 1.35 million cars worldwide

Wed Jan 28, 1:43 am ET TOKYO (Reuters) – Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) said on Wednesday it would recall more than 1.35 million Vitz and two other models globally to fix a defect in the seatbelt, a component in the exhaust system or both. Subject to the recall in Japan are 525,898 Vitz, Belta and Ractis cars built from January 2005 to April 2008, Toyota said in a filing with the transport ministry. It will also recall a combined 830,000 units of the Vitz subcompact, called Yaris in many markets, and Belta exported to Europe, North America and other markets, a spokeswoman said. One case of fire was reported in Japan due to the faulty seatbelt design, which could cause a noise-absorber device to melt when the seatbelt tensioner is activated in a collision, Toyota said. No accident was reported in Japan from the defective exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) pipe, which could crack in the worst-case scenario and cause exhaust gases that fail to clear emissions standards to leak. Toyota declined to disclose the estimated cost of the recalls. Its shares ended flat at 2,980 yen compared with a 1.0 percent rise in the transport equipment subindex (.ITEQP.T).

Police said on Monday the burglars looted the store, which is closed Sundays, some time on Saturday night after entering the building via an awning. Once inside, they cleared out several glass showcases containing expensive jewellery on the main floor. A security guard discovered the theft around 6 am on Sunday morning. With the crime scene roped off to the public, the newspaper reported employees were still figuring the total extent of the losses for insurance purposes. 2). Paulson reaps £270m ‘shorting’ RBS

Paulson & Co, one of the world’s biggest hedge funds, has made a profit of at least £270m betting on a fall in the share price of Royal Bank of Scotland over the past four months.

New York-based Paulson, run by billionaire John Paulson, covered its “short” position in RBS on Friday, according to a regulatory filing, dropping below the 0.25 per cent disclosure limit. The scale of the profit is likely to reinvigorate the debate over short selling, which has seen archbishops and politicians criticise the practice and the Financial Services Authority ban additional shorting of banks for months. Short sellers borrow and sell shares in the hope of buying them back for less and making profits after the price has fallen. MPs will on Tuesday raise the issue with hedge funds testifying at a meeting of the Treasury select committee, following a letter from the committee’s chairman to the FSA questioning its lifting of the ban.

An intense fire which erupted after a freight train carrying diesel and heating oil derailed in Ayrshire earlier today has been put out by firefighters.   More than 50 fire crew were involved in controlling the fire, which broke out after five fuel wagons on a freight train were derailed soon after 6am on a bridge half a mile south of Stewarton station. The train was carrying heating oil and diesel from Grangemouth refinery to a fuel depot in Kilmarnock. British transport police said the bridge had collapsed and that the crash had brought down a power line. Scottish Power said up to 100 homes in the Kilmaurs area of Ayrshire had lost electricity as a result. The train's 45-year-old driver escaped unharmed. It is thought his locomotive and the first four wagons on the 10-wagon train became decoupled from the rear six wagons. Five of the loose wagons came off the track, striking a power line. Fire crews had to wait until 10.15am when Scottish Power isolated the electricity supply to the cable serving the railway line and an overhead cable serving local communities, to make the track safe. The crash closed the single-track line between Barrhead in East Renfrewshire and Kilmarnock and police closed surrounding roads, causing chaos during this morning's rush hour.

Pfizer seals $68bn Wyeth purchase

January 26 2009 11:39. Pfizer on Monday confirmed a deal to buy Wyeth, a rival US drug maker, for about $68bn in a move that will reshape the global drug industry. Pfizer will pay the equivalent of $50.19 a share in cash and stock for Wyeth as it attempts to address concerns over its ability to offset upcoming patent expirations on its blockbuster drugs, including cholesterol-fighting drug Lipitor. It has agreed to pay $33 in cash and 0.985 of a share of Pfizer stock for each Wyeth share. The two companies spent Sunday hammering out that exchange ratio and other final terms of the deal, including details on who would fill a few remaining seats on the combined companies’ board of directors. Pfizer, which expects to raise $22.5bn to help fund the deal, has lined up financing commitments from Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs and remains in talks to bring other banks into the group. Jeffrey Kindler, Pfizer chief executive, who approached Wyeth months ago about a potential merger, is poised to be chief executive of the combined company. “The new company will be an industry leader in human, animal and consumer health. With our combined biopharmaceuticals business, it will lead in primary and specialty care as well as in small and large molecules. Its geographic presence in most of the world’s developed and developing countries will be unrivalled,” Mr Kindler said in a statement. Pfizer said it expected the Wyeth deal to be accretive to adjusted diluted earnings per share in the second full year after closing, and anticipated cost savings of approximately $4bn by the third year after closing. Like Pfizer, Wyeth is facing patent expirations on several key drugs. But it has strong vaccines and biotech businesses, and the two companies could save billions of dollars in costs by combining. Pfizer may not be the only drug maker with an interest in Wyeth, and the drug sector has been a rare area in which corporate buyers have shown aggression in the past six months despite the downtrodden economy. Bristol-Myers Squibb recently lost out in an effort to buy ImClone after Eli Lilly came forward with a higher offer. Given the tight credit markets, however, Pfizer may face a diminished interloper threat for a deal of this size. Rival drug giant Roche, for example, is mired in an attempt to take over Genentech, and Novartis is thought to be building up its coffers to acquire a greater stake inAlcon. Pfizer has been receiving advice on the deal from Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs, while Morgan Stanley and Evercore have been advising Wyeth. Head of Ukraine energy giant operated after gas dispute

The head of Ukraine's oil and gas monopoly Naftogaz has undergone emergency heart surgery and is now in intensive care.

According to Prime Minister Yulia Timoschenko the pressure put on Oleg Dubina during gas talks between Russia and Ukraine led to his health problems. Oleg Dubina played a crucial role in these complicated negotiations. Moscow stopped its gas supplies to Ukraine on January 1 because of unpaid debt. A week later Kiev blocked Russian transit gas supplies to Europe. The two countries finally resolved the dispute on January 19 after intense negotiations.

A knifeman has murdered two small children and a carer in an apparently random attack at a Belgium nursery. He slashed another 10 people leaving some with serious injuries then calmly cycled away. Both the dead children were under three years old. The attacker was arrested shortly afterwards in supermarket near the nursery in Dendermonde 20 miles from Brussels. Witnesses said the man entered the Fabeltjesland nursery which looks after 18 children and immediately began slashing a knife around. Prosecutor Christian Du Four said: "We have three people dead and 10 in various hospitals." He did not identify the suspect, who was injured as police detained him and taken to a nearby hospital. Reports said the man was a local resident known to police. The city used a nearby community centre to provide counselling to victims and witnesses. Veerle Heeren, the social welfare minister for the regional Flemish government, said she would be investigating security at the nursery.

Wyeth's revenue totaled $22.4 billion and its profit $4.6 billion in 2007. The Journal says joining New York-based Pfizer and Madison, New Jersey-based Wyeth would create a behemoth with combined revenue of about $75 billion and a line of blockbuster drugs including Pfizer's cholesterol drug Lipitor and Wyeth's pediatric vaccine Prevnar. The newspaper says Pfizer, the world's largest drug maker by revenue, would likely use a combination of cash and stock for the acquisition. Details on price haven't been worked out, but Wyeth has a market capitalization of about $52 billion and premiums in the sector have averaged just over 20%. That would put the value of the deal at well over $60 billion.

Pfizer in particular is bracing for the 2011 expiration of the patent on cholesterol fighter Lipitor, the world's top-selling drug and which accounts for a quarter of Pfizer's roughly $48 billion in annual revenue.

Pfizer acquired Lipitor after a $116 billion takeover of Warner-Lambert Co. in 2000. Two weeks ago, Pfizer announced plans to fire up to 800 researchers worldwide as it signalled that an annual R&D budget of $7.5 billion is failing to fill its drugs pipeline.

A casa e as empresas de Júlio Carvalho Monteiro, empresário e tio materno de José Sócrates, bem como o escritório de advogados de Vasco Vieira de Almeida foram hoje alvo de buscas, no âmbito do ‘caso Freeport'

As diligências foram desencadeadas e realizadas pelo DCIAP (Departamento central de Investigação e Acção Penal) e pela Polícia Judiciária.

Em causa estão suspeitas de corrupção no processo que permitiu a viabilização da construção do centro comercial Freeport, em Alcochete, o maior outlet da Europa. O inquérito criminal em curso foi aberto em Fevereiro de 2005.
Segundo disse ao SOL Júlio Carvalho Monteiro, a «Polícia levou diversa documentação», nomeadamente documentos de «offshores antigas». Numa empresa de Carvalho Monteiro, a ISA, em Setúbal, foi apreendida toda a contabilidade. Os investigadores referiram-lhe também um e-mail que terá sido enviado para o Freeport, sobre o licenciamento do outlet.
Também o escritório de Vasco Vieira de Almeida – o advogado da Freeport Plc – foi alvo de buscas dos investigadores. Contactado pelo SOL, o advogado Vasco Vieira de Almeida, recusou fazer declarações, invocando que não fala da sua vida profissional.

Mário Lino revelou ainda que ficou acordado com Espanha que, na ligação de Lisboa a Madrid em alta velocidade, irá ser construída uma estação internacional mesmo na linha de fronteira na zona de Elvas e Badajoz, estando prevista também a  construção de duas pontes: uma para a linha de mercadorias, que vai ficar situada no lado português, e que vai servir a linha Sines-Madrid,  e outra para passageiros, do lado espanhol.

Police investigate Travolta extortion attempt

Wednesday, January 21 06:25 am Police in the Bahamas have launched an investigation surrounding an attempt to extort money from John Travolta.

The full details of the extortion plot have not been released, but a report in Bahamian newspaper The Tribune suggests police have brought two people in for questioning, and one is believed to be a politician. Travolta's lawyers have confirmed the extortion attempt is connected to the movie star's recent loss - the actor's 16-year-old son Jett died after suffering a seizure at the family retreat in the Bahamas on 2 January (09). Last January, the large cargo vessel Ice Prince lost 2,000 tonnes of sawn timber from its deck before it sank in rough seas in the English Channel off the coast of Dorset.
